Troy Historic Village- Civil War Days
We host 8th grade middle school students from Troy, Fraser and Royal Oak.
Dates: May 2, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18
Time: 8:30 – 2:00
The day consists of 6 stations. The students are divided into “companies” of approximately 30-40, depending on the size of the total group. The students are escorted from station to station by museum staff/volunteers. They are at each station for approximately 45 minutes.
The stations are: Military Life, Military Drill, Communication, Recreation, Trade/Transportation and Slavery (1st person presentation of Sojourner Truth). The day concludes with the Gettysburg Address and information on some of the soldiers from Oakland County who served.
At the Trades and Transportation station we have blacksmithing, wheelwrighting and horses. The museum does have several volunteer blacksmiths but they are not always available on weekdays or they cannot give more than a day or two. That is why I am contacting MABA. We are looking for blacksmiths who can give us a day or two. They will be paired up with another blacksmith. The duo will operate the forge and give a brief presentation on blacksmithing, inserting the importance of the trade during the Civil War, and tie it in a little to the horses and the wheelwright.
The sooner I can get a commitment the better. Thank you so much.

The U. P. Steam and Gas Engine Association of Escanaba, Michigan (Delta County), cordially invites any and all Blacksmiths and families to participate in their Big Ole's Pioneer Days and Hammer In Days and Festival. This event is something for the entire family! Dates are set for July 8 & 9, 2011. There are 500 camping sites available, and 300 are equipped with power and water. Charges for demonstrating blacksmiths are $10.00 per site per day, including one dumping station. The Gate Fee is also waived for them. Showers are also available and included near the dumping station area. Arrangements may be made for demonstrating blacksmiths who wish to tent for FREE. A 10% donation to the club on anything sold during this event would help the club with its expenses and would be appreciated, but is not mandatory. Bruce Belanger states that other activities will be chain saw carving, live music, Enduro obstacle course, and performances by The Great Lakes Timber Show. Historian, singer and storyteller Bill Jamerson will perform during both days. Jamerson brings the history, songs and stories from the old logging camps to life for listeners, transporting them back in time, when logs were floated down river to saw mills. Friday evening in the Escanaba Elks Lodge Tent, music will be provided by Bob Chaillier, while Saturday, the Rhythm & Blues styling of the Lark Brothers will be presented. Also, part of the two day event, visitors can see a working Blacksmith Shop (headed up by myself, George Potvin), visit a one-room School House or a working old time Barber Shop. Other attractions that will be open and operating are: The General Store, Museum, Cook Shack, Wood-Carving Shop, working Civil War Era Sawmill, Fiber Boutique and Candle Shop, Wooly Sock Shop, Rock Shop, Grainery, Textile Shop, the old-time Radio Shop, Hot Glass Blowing Shop, Pottery Shop and C C's Creations Shop. There is also a Trappers Convention being held at the Exhibition Building too. We look forward to a most enjoyable two-day event with you and your families! George Potvin, Head Blacksmith
